Kid Lit Author and Co-Founder of the SCBWI, Stephen Mooser Helps Haitian Students #KidLitForHaiti

KID LIT FOR HAITI:  StephenMooser is a master of the middle grade novel with over 60 books to his credit--He's donating signed book to the highest auction bidder-as long as you have a U.S. Mailing address.
Check out his BOOKS on this Indie website (or visit Tattered Cover or Boulder Bookstore)
If you’ve ever attended an SCBWI conference, you will know that Stephen has a big heart for Haiti (that’s why this is the second of two items he’s donating for this auction). Stephen was in Haiti shortly after the 2011 earthquake. His son, Bryn spent three years in Haiti as head of a group called Artists for Peace and Justice ( associated with St. Damiens hospital in Port Au Prince)—in the end Bryn Mooser oversaw the building of three schools in Haiti, elementary, middle and high school—Bryn also started the first little league team in Haiti and built the first movie theater following the earthquake—Sun City Picture House. A movie about the theater won awards. Furthermore Baseball InThe Time of Cholera-a short film about the team and the cholera epidemic also won awards –check out both--Bryn Mooser and ArtistsFor Peace and Justice
Stephen Mooser
Stephen Mooser grew up in Fresno, California and later attended UCLA where he received a BA in Motion Pictures and later a Masters in Journalism. Steve even got into politics and was President of the UCLA Senior Class in 1963.  After graduating he spent some time looking for treasure. Steve searched for pirate gold hidden an Island in the Gulf of Panama, and spent nearly a year searching the Utah desert for bars of silver stolen by the Outlaw Butch Cassidy and his partner, The Sundance Kid.
Needless to say, Steve didn’t find much treasure, but many of his personal adventures have found their way into his books. Steve Mooser’s first book for children, 101 Black Cats (Scholastic) revolved around a treasure as did Orphan Jeb at the Massacree (Knopf) and Shadows on the Graveyard Trail (Dell Yearling). Among series books Steve has written are The Treasure Hounds (Troll), The Creepy Creature Club (Dell)The All-Star Meatballs (Dell) and Goofball Malone, Ace Detective (Penguin). In all Steve has written over 60 books for children. In addition to adventure stories, he has written a number of nonfiction books about the Weird and Strange. Those include Into The Unknown: Nine Astounding Stories (Lippincott) and The Man Who Ate A Car and Tons of Other Weird True Stories (Dell).

In 1971, with Lin Oliver, Stephen Mooser co-founded the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Today, the SCBWI has nearly 25,000 members around the world with chapters everywhere from Montana to Mongolia and Indiana to India. Find out more at www.scbwi.org
You might be interested to see Steve’s latest project, Class Clown Academy atwww.classclownacademy.com . The Class Clown Academy is a virtual school where you can watch funny films in the school theater, build and fly paper airplanes, have a food fight in the cafeteria, compose some whoopee cushion tunes in the music room, and shop for neat Class Clown Academy books and merchandise in the student store.

Illustrator Julie-Rowan-Zoch Supports #KidLitForHaiti With Just-Released Set of Year-by-Year Keepsake Board Books

KID LIT FOR HAITI:  Illustrator Julie Rowan-Zoch is donating her just-released Year-by-Year board book set: You’reHere! You’re One! You’re Two! (Bailiwick Press)

Books: three delightful board books illustrated by Julie Rowan-Zoch (author Karla Oceanak) just released from Bailiwick Press!

What you get shipped to you or address of your choice:

“Set of three adorable keepsake board books that double as congratulations or birthday cards for a newborn, one-year-old, and two-year old.”

REVIEW: In Publisher's Weekly on You're Here!:This exuberant ode to a baby’s accomplishments during its first year kicks off the Year-by-Year Books series (You’re One! and You’re Two! are available simultaneously). “So much, much will happen/ in 12 months to come!/ You’ll wriggle and smile/ and suck your wee thumb,” writes Oceanak beside newcomer Rowan-Zoch’s delicately colored sketch of a baby elephant. Eating, speaking first words, and crawling are other highlighted milestones, and while the rhymes occasionally skirt the edge of being too precious, Oceanak balances those moments with an acknowledgment of parental weariness amid all that first-year joy: “And we knock, knock on wood/ that you’ll sleep through the night.”

(P.S. If you don’t win this auction, there’s no need to cry—you can still order this set from Julie’s local independent book stare, Old Firehouse Books  970-484-7898, or email: oldfirehousebooks@gmail.com )

Author Lindsay Eland Donating Ten Page Critique #KidLitForHaiti

KID LIT FOR HAITI:  Lindsay is donating a critique of the first ten pages of a middle grade or YA novel.
Lindsay Eland is the Co-Regional Advisor for the Rocky Mountain Region of the SCBWI and truly one of my favorite people on the planet, Earth. With mentorship from Lindsay, my writing finally improved enough to get an agent—Lindsay helped (and helped and helped!) me critique my manuscript, until I got that yes!
Lindsay is the author of Scones and Sensibility (Egmont 2009) as well as A Summer of Sundays (Egmont 2013), and it was recently announced in Publishers Marketplace:

PW Announcement: "Martha Mihalick at Greenwillow has acquired North American rights to Scones and Sensibility author Lindsay Eland's Six Times Revenge. Pitched as A View from Saturday meets The Breakfast Club, the middle-grade novel follows Adam and Perk, the school's most scheming minds and best friends as they plan the most epic of epic pranks to take down the school bully. It's scheduled for 2016; Rebecca Sherman at Writers House negotiated the deal in an exclusive submission."
you can find Lindsay's books at Tattered Cover, Boulder Bookstore, online, or at your local bookstore

Other important facts about Lindsay:
“Lindsay is madly in love with her husband and their four children. She has a great big dog named Cowboy, and two rats...yes rats. She's pretty good at imitating people. She will never kill an insect unless it is in her shower. Rainy days are her favorite. Lindsay gets easily sick in the car, on airplanes, and swinging on swings. She has her nose pierced. Making people laugh is the best feeling in the world to her. She love, love, loves to sing and still does ballet, even though it's in her living room. Lindsay has an affinity for chicken fajitas and homemade chocolate chip cookies...though not at the same time. She adores anything chocolate (hold the nuts please), and she's only had long hair once in all her 30 years of life (she was able to keep herself away from scissors for about eight months).”

This auction: is for a ten-page critique with author-extraordinaire Lindsay Eland (critique via email). If you are the winner, please format your pages in Times Roman, 12 pt. font, double spaced.

Critique from SIX Superstars! #KidLitForHaiti

Elaine, Penny, Will, Sally, Kim (sadly, Jerilyn is not in this photo)
KID LIT FOR HAITI:  This auction is for a critique of the first ten pages of your manuscript (PB, MG, or YA) from both of my critiquing groups. That means you will receive feedback from a total of six people!

This auction: is for a pass to my critiquing partners—feedback from me and five others. Each of us come armed with a super-power—creativity, voice, plot, structure, grammar—you’ll get it all! You will submit the first ten pages of your manuscript (or one picture book manuscript). You’ll submit via email in Times Roman, 12 point font, double spaced, one inch margins. After you submit you will receive your six critiques within a month— six critiques! Get the feedback you need to gain insight in your work and take your craft to the next level.

Who are my fabulous critiquing partners?
Elaine Pease is the award-winning author of four books. Her website can be found at www.peasepodbooks.com One of my favorite titles by Elaine is Tallie's’sChristmas Lights Surpise, A HolidayWhodunit! It’s a picture book with a clever mystery to solve! Elaine spends weeks on the road making school visits—she really has her finger on the pulse of what’s going on in classrooms. Her award-winning historical fiction middle grade GHOST OVER BOULDER CREEK is currently a finalist in the Youth One Book, One Denver 2015 program (and if you're familar with GHOST OVER BOULDER CREEK and would like to vote for it click here ).

Will Limón  has been published by Harper Collins. He is the founder of Will Limón's Plot Chart as well as the workshop Will Limón's Making Scenes Come Alive. If your plot or scene has a hole, Will can certainly identify and point it; he’ll steer you in the right direction. Will’s writing has received recognition—not only is he published in the adult market, his YA work-in-progess received honorable mention (2nd place) in a regional SCBWI scholarship award.  (P.S.  In addition to Will’s ingenuity and understanding of scene construction, Will is my go-to guy for grammar advice!).

Sally Spear is probably the most creative person I know—I swear wizards speak to her! Sally is the master of the picture book, but when we bring YA and Middle Grade novels to the critiquing group, Sally provides incredible feedback and insight from a completely unique angle. She has the keen ability to spot voice drops and narrator intrusion. My manuscripts always launch in a better direction after critiques from Sally.

Penny Berman is both a kid lit writer as well as a screenwriter. She studied screenwriting at UCLA and currently has a project receiving a lot of interest in Hollywood (where everything is currently hush-hush, but I can brag that BIG names are involved). Penny is also in the final draft of one of the coolest middle grade novels you’ll ever read.  If you want your manuscript to scream with voice Voice VOICE, then Penny is your go-to gal.

Jerilyn Patterson is another master of voice and also an expert at turning a scene. And that’s not just my opinion, Jerilyn won recognition by being the first place winner of The Vicki Ferguson Memorial Scholarship where she entered the first ten pages of her manuscript and won free tuition to a regional SCBWI conference. Jerilyn is so amazing at writing and critiquing because she spends a lot of time studying craft—one of her favorite books is called SCENE AND STRUCTURE by Jack Bickham. She will use her creative skills and wealth of knowledge to provide you with the best feedback possible.

And Me (Kim Tomsic) I’ll critique my butt-off for you!

Plopping, Zooming, Slashing and Other Horrendous Happenings in THE TUMBLEWEED CAME BACK

THE TUMBLEWEED CAMEBACK by Carmela LaVigna Coyle (illustrated by Kevin Rechin) (Rico Chico Books for Children, release September 2013) is a charming tall-tale story of two determined kids and one Granny matched against the antagonist—the pesky tumbleweed. Those plopping, zooming and slashing tumbleweed double and triple on every page turn, ruining pools and farmland. And no matter if the kids send them away down the Rio Grande or by time machine, the tumbleweed come back. But not to worry—the kids in this story have grit. They rely on problem solving and ingenuity to rid themselves and their Granny of the multiplying nuisance.

The fun word choices in this story make it a delight to read aloud, and further enhance the tall-tale storytelling and the western setting. The colorful and comical illustrations by Kevin Rechin both punctuate the yarn as well as open the door for the child’s imagination to go wild. Parents, grandparents, and teachers alike will enjoy the pluck and resourcefulness of Carmela LaVigna Coyle’s characters.

THE TUMBLEWEED CAMEBACK was this year's winner of the Colorado Book Award for Children's Literature. It is fresh and original, and it’s funny while also showing kids that imagination and determination can payoff.
